Tooth Colored Filling & RCT

TOOTH COLOURED RESTORATIONS

Tooth colored restorations are preffered over traditionally used silver amalgam fillings as they prove better over the latter in terms of commendable aesthetics and are free of mercury and any other kind of harmful material as a constituent unlike amalgam fillings where mercury is a major element.

This material is either composite resin or glass ionomer cement. We, at our well-equipped dental care centre use best quality nano ceramic filed composite resin that provides better aesthetics as well as serves for long period of time with high durability rate in comparison with other traditional fillings.

This treatment is carried out with the help of modern curing LED lights which bring the setting of filling material.

It is a revolutionary technique to treat dental problem in an effective manner, enabling patients to modify oral conditions while maintaining a dazzling smile.

Today, most of the patients choose this method to get restorations completed in white materials. Virtually identical in appearance with naturally grown teeth; this treatment provides whiter, brighter and healthier smile. However, continuous developments in dental technologies have made this procedure more promising than ever before. In addition, it does not put any adverse effect on teeth. You do not need to doubt this fact as extensive researches and studies have proven it. Actually, it maintains the same strength as natural tooth enamel.

ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

A tooth crown has three layers which are known as enamel, dentine and pulp. On the other hand, crown comprises cementum, dentin and pulp.

When dental caries is in the enamel or dentin it may require a normal tooth restoration but Root Canal Treatment (also called Endodontics) is needed when blood or nerve supply of tooth (known as pulp) is affected through decay or injury.

It is usually needed for teeth which are already treated with very large or deep fillings, or in teeth which recently had a filling due to deep dental caries (decay) in tooth.

Root canal treatment on patients at out world class dental centre is carried out under complete asepsis under the guidance of Dr Rajat Sethi and an endodontist Dr Monika Tandan.

We treat every patient with ultra modern instruments including low radiation dental x-ray and magnifying loupes protapers for root canal treatments. For the same reason, we command high success rate for one sitting root canal treatments.

Q: WHY IS ROOT CANAL TREATMENT NEEDED?

A: If pulp gets affected, infection may spread through the root canal system of tooth which may eventually lead to an abscess.

If effective treatment for root canal treatment (RCT) is not carried out, infection will spread and tooth might require extraction.

Q: DOES IT HURT?

A: No, not at all! Anesthesia is used before starting the treatment therefore whole procedure feels like ordinary filling however appointment will be longer in comparison with normal filling. Do not fear about anything if feel some kind of pain or discomfort for 3-4 days as it is normal post treatment. Tooth may also feel slight tender and “different” for some days.

Q: WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT INVOLVE?

A: This treatment focuses on removal of all kinds of infection from root canal. Root is then cleaned and filled to stop infection from spreading to other areas. Root canal treatment is a time-taking procedure therefore you might need two or more appointments for complete process.

First of all, infected pulp is removed. Any abscess, if present, can also be eliminated at this time. Afterward root canal is cleaned and shaped perfectly for permanent filling. Root canal is also disinfected with strong antiseptic medicines and once the dentist is confident that infection is not there, root filling can be placed into the canal. Filling is a high quality rubber material that is compressed into root to seal permanently.

Q: WHAT WILL MY TOOTH LOOK LIKE AFTER TREATMENT?

A: Earlier, a root filled tooth used to get dark after treatment. But now modern techniques are safe and do not cause any side effect. If discoloration happens, there are effective treatments to restore the natural look.

Q: WHAT IF THE INFECTION COMES BACK?

A: Success rate of root canal treatment is around 80-90%. In case, any mis-happening takes place then treatment could usually be repeated. If tooth has a specific problem that restricts dentist to carry out the treatment in an ideal manner then it is possible to refer to a specialist who give more time as well as use advanced techniques and instruments to abolish the problem. You essentially need to know it can be very expensive in addition it is not normally available on NHS.

In many cases, tooth extraction remains the only option left if treatment fails.

Q: WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE THE TREATMENT?

A: The only alternate to RCT is removal of the affected tooth. Once the pulp is damaged, it cannot be cured without treatment. Additionally, it is not suggested to leave infected tooth in the mouth.

Whilst some patients prefer extraction, it is generally advised to keep as many natural teeth as possible.

Q: ARE THERE ANY RISKS?

A: There is a small threat for pain and swelling instantly following the treatment and for a few days. This is basically controlled with over-the-counter painkillers but can prove very painful in some cases. .

There is a risk of various complications during treatment. Dentist may “perforate” the tooth (this is when an opening is made through the side of root-canal by medical expert when searching for small or difficult root canals) or that one of the root-canal instruments breaks inside the tooth. Root-filling may sometimes inadvertently stretch beyond tip of root, or may not entirely fill the root to tip. Any of these difficulties may compromise the prognosis for tooth and delay or prevent treatment. During serious complication, extraction becomes inevitable. Referral to the specialist is also an option to go for.

Q: WILL THE TOOTH BE SAFE AFTER TREAMENT?

A: Root filled teeth are less strong and more brittle than naturally grown for the same reason it is often suggested to restore root-filled tooth with a crown to provide extra strength to the tooth. If this is necessary, we basically wait for a few days before crowning so that we get assured that RCT is properly working. Sometimes, filling tooth with a composite (white) filling rather than a mixture of (metal) filling will provide more strength to tooth considerably and avoid or postpone the need for a crown.

Q: WHAT ABOUT AFTERCARE?

A: Root treated teeth should be cured just the same way as any other tooth. Remember to clean teeth at least once a day, preferably with fluoride enriched toothpaste. In addition, watch your eating habits. Try best efforts to keep sugary snacks aside and say “yes” only to mealtimes if possible. Furthermore, visit dental expert at regular interval for thorough check-up.

RCT does not kill a tooth. Actually, root canal treatment removes pulp tissue from inside the tooth, this condition cannot be termed as killing of tooth. With successful endodontic treatment, tooth continues to receive blood supply and nourishment from nearby tissues and supporting bone. Body's immune system also continues to identify endodontically treated tooth as viable and healthy, just as it recognizes any other healthy tooth. An endodontically treated tooth basically needs a protective crown and once this restoration has been completed, tooth continues to function as an integral part of dental arch. A tooth that has had RCT and has been properly restored is no more susceptible to fracture, decay, or gum problems than any other tooth.
